Abstract

The rapid digital transformation of higher education has expanded the use of online learning platforms, cloud-based services, learning management systems, and other technology-mediated environments, while simultaneously increasing institutional exposure to cybersecurity threats. This paper examines the emerging landscape of cybersecurity in higher education with particular attention to major cyber threats, institutional preparedness, cybersecurity frameworks, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and the economic and sustainability implications of cyber incidents. The review indicates that phishing, ransomware, malware, software vulnerabilities, password insecurity, denial-of-service attacks, and intellectual-property theft remain significant challenges for universities. Existing literature further highlights the importance of governance, institutional leadership, cybersecurity awareness, technical controls, and adaptable cybersecurity frameworks. The integration of artificial intelligence, machine learning, cloud technologies, simulations, virtual laboratories, and other technology-enabled approaches is increasingly shaping cybersecurity education and institutional protection mechanisms. The literature also demonstrates that cyber incidents extend beyond technical disruption, generating financial, operational, reputational, and educational consequences for higher education institutions. At the same time, cybersecurity investment is increasingly examined through economic and sustainability perspectives, particularly in relation to risk reduction, protection of critical infrastructure, data protection, and institutional trust. Overall, the reviewed literature indicates a need for comprehensive, adaptive, and institution-wide cybersecurity strategies that integrate technological, organisational, educational, financial, and sustainability dimensions. The paper identifies continuing gaps in empirical research and highlights the need for further evidence-based investigation of cybersecurity preparedness and resilience in higher education.
