In the field of education, students face high stress, poor concentration and emotional exhaustion. In today’s fast-paced digital world, many people are turning to smartphone apps to manage their stress levels, enhance focus and improve their overall well-being. Among these, mindfulness and meditation apps are becoming very popular as they promise calmness and improved well-being. Mindfulness means ‘awareness’. Being mindful is about being present, without judgment, in the here and now. Mindfulness enables us to pay attention to what we are doing at the point at which we are doing it and to be aware of what is happening in our mind and body and in the external environment. This practice is known to help in emotional control, resilience, and reducing anxiety. With the growth of technology, mindfulness practices are now available through mobile apps such as Headspace and Calm, which make these techniques accessible beyond clinics and therapy rooms. These apps are now used in workplaces and educational settings as well. Despite their growing popularity, research findings about their effectiveness and the ways they work remain scattered. This narrative review aims to summarize existing studies on the effectiveness of mindfulness and meditation smartphone apps in improving psychological well-being and to identify the key mechanisms and features such as guided sessions, reminders, and self-monitoring that support mental health improvement. Evidence shows positive effects of mindfulness apps in reducing anxiety and maintaining emotional balance. However, some limitations exist, such as inconsistent use and short-term benefits.
