Abstract

Jai Prakash Narayan was a great social thinker and political leader who had ushered in an era of great socio-political revolutions, when the country was grappling with the major issues of poverty, unemployment, corruption, insecurity, homelessness, dictatorship, inequality and injustice. His thoughts and movements caught the eye not only in India, but also throughout the world. Due to his extraordinary role in social and political change his name became popular in the context of “Loknayak”. Jayprakash went through his education in American Universities, and was greatly influenced by Marxism. He returned to India and joined the Indian National Congress, where he was actively engaged in the struggle for independence from the British rule in India. Following the Independence movement, over time Narayan was gradually away from party involvement and dedicated his life to social reconstruction and building an Anti-Congress platform in 1948. In 1952, Jai Prakash Narayan established the Praja Socialist Party to give voice to the disenfranchised and provide an alternative political platform. He did his utmost to introduce Sarvodaya Movement of Acharya Vinoba Bhave. Jayprakash was actively associated with Sarvodaya Movement started by Gandhiji and led by Vinoba Bhave. In the 1950s, J. P. Narayan advocated a new social order that sought to create a classless and stateless society based on people’s socialism.. He was greatly distressed with the increasing corruption in India’s political arena. He initially became the “Jeevan Danee” of Jeevandan movement led by Vinoba Bhave. To counteract the dominant party politics he introduced the idea of partyless and communitarian democracy to develop democratic culture and values. Sampurna Kranti, or Total Revolution, represented the final intellectual contribution of Jay Prakash Narayan. It reflected his lifelong pursuit of establishing a new socio-economic and political order in India. His vision aimed to transform India into a democratic, socially just, and prosperous nation. The present study focuses on the social and political contributions of Jay Prakash Narayan to the reconstruction of Indian society throughout his life. He remained dedicated to the purification of the political, socio-economic, and moral life of the people.
