Climate change has emerged as one of the most critical global challenges of the 21st century, with localized impacts varying significantly across regions. This research investigates the multifaceted dimensions of climate change and sustainability in the city of Varanasi, India—one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited urban settlements and a major cultural, religious, and economic hub. The study integrates climatic, environmental, hydrological, and socio-economic perspectives to assess both historical trends and future sustainability challenges. Using secondary data analysis, time-series climate records, and environmental indicators such as air quality, temperature variability, and water pollution levels, this research identifies key patterns of environmental degradation linked to anthropogenic activities and climate variability. Findings indicate significant increases in temperature extremes, variability in rainfall patterns, and degradation of the Ganga River ecosystem due to urbanization and waste discharge. Studies show that temperature increases are directly associated with rising mortality rates in Varanasi, highlighting severe public health implications. The research further examines sustainability initiatives, including afforestation programs, waste management policies, and river cleaning missions, while critically evaluating their effectiveness. Despite policy interventions, challenges such as population pressure, inadequate infrastructure, and socio-economic inequalities continue to hinder sustainable development. This study concludes by proposing an integrated sustainability framework that emphasizes climate-resilient urban planning, community participation, technological interventions, and policy reforms. The findings contribute to the broader discourse on sustainable urban development in rapidly growing cities in the Global South, offering Varanasi as a case study for balancing cultural heritage with environmental sustainability.
