The Double-Edged Sword: Understanding Student Engagement and learning with DigitalMedia

Abstract

The tremendous rise of digital media in the field of education has shaped the students' lives, offering them heights of opportunities along with challenges. This study examines the role of digital media in students' academic learning, focusing on benefits, drawbacks, and motivating factors. Using a descriptive research design, data were collected from 383 undergraduate students from various private colleges, public colleges, and universities through a structured questionnaire. Taro Yamane’s (1967) formula was applied to ascertain the sample size for the study. The study concludes that digital media enhances collaboration, communication with experts, and easy accessibility to various study materials. But excessive use leads to distraction, cyberbullying, lack of sleep, and hampers academic growth and performance, which leads to depression and anxiety among students. The study concludes with practical recommendations, which can be implemented in colleges, that include promoting digital literacy, time management training, and using gamification techniques to optimize educational benefits.

Keynote: Social media, students’ learning, academic performance, digital distractions.
