Parenting Practices on Behaviour of Children with Developmental Disabilities

Abstract

Children with Disabilities from the category of sensory impairment to neurological disabilities, multiple disabilities as per RPWD act are recognized in the country (RPWD, Act, 2016). Parents are the first mentor who have a lot of responsibility in rearing the child (Lisa Knoche et al, 2006). It is challenging to raise a child with a disability as it requires physical strength, emotional regulation, cognitive alertness and constant monitoring and support. Being a child with disabilities, parents need to be mindful in listening and reflecting on the child (Benn, R., Akiva, T., Arel, S., & Roeser, R. W., 2012). The objectives of study to understand the parenting practices on behaviour regulation of children with developmental disabilities. The method of the study was quantitative in nature where parents having children with disabilities from 10 to 18 years of age were selected as sample for the study. The research tool for the study was a survey questionnaire about interaction between children and parents on regulating behaviour practices. The results showed positive and effective parenting among parents but there is still a need for improvement in describing or explaining their mistakes and the reason behind the instruction and provide frequent constructive feedback. Parent training programs on behaviour regulation at different stages could be beneficial to establish appropriate behaviour and promote responsibility in the children with developmental disabilities.
